Hi, so last month was truly a treat, so I’m grateful for all of the goofs that showed up, performed and threw beanbags. What a pleasure. Now the new year is upon us and so is the very second Club Blob Tub event. Get used to me saying that this is gonna be a great lineup every month, because I’m gonna have a hard time not regularly resorting to such hyperbole. I feel that good about the programming.
So this month of January we are looking at a visitation from 2/3rds of one of my favorite “rock” power trios to emerge in the 21st century, Palberta. What does that mean? Well, for one, Philly based Nina Ryser will be here presenting some of her spellbinding keyboard-driven pop songs, and for two, Ani Ivry aka Annie Blech will be ripping alongside the supercharged battery of Matt Norman in Funny Band. Do I have any idea what that will look and sound like? Well, from what I know Matt and Ani’s sensibilities, I’m imagining something sonically baroque with a presence and focus of sheer unpredictability, and likely some kind of herky jerky energy, but I could be wrong. They are called Funny Band. If they had something to link to as a band, I would surely have linked it up for you by now. So what then of this BabyAspirinDVD? It’s the solo project of the Artistic Director of the Berkeley-Now-Glendale Gamelan that recently did a recital of Daniel Schmidt’s music for Upend at 2220 Arts this fall. You know, what’s his name: Cordey Lopez. A slacker metal dude with deranged synth skills and punishing precision on Bonang, I am excited to see what kind of lightning he zaps into blops of metalic mud.
In these here monthly mix events, I will always be trying to add some element of text, reading or performing aloud, perhaps even lectures - something to gently push our brains briefly into a different zone than just the ease of pure sonics or pure musics. Huntrezz Janos knocked me out of my seat when I saw her perform at a showcase of trans poets up at Stories. Her post-human breathless speedy delivery of text was like dropping a heavy old CPU on your foot only to have it explode with a swarm of mechanical bees. Seeing her set reminded me that I wanted to get crackalackin at organizing events again, even if I likely had no business doing it, because I just want everyone to know about artists this smart and weird and amazing. Of course, before, between and after the performances there’s gotta be DJ heating up the room, and this month, neighborhood mastermind of the Bedcrumbshow streaming sucka free radio Brandon ‘Grump’ Smith will be at the decks keeping us guessing. I’m working on Antonio, hopefully we’ll have some type of game to entertain us. Anyway, tell your friends, bring a crew and join us in the Tub.
Still lost?

anti genre music sound performance series; first Tuesdays of the month.
We say 'anti-genre' as the sensible refusal of self-categorization, pathetic border-building and commercial algorithmic-appeasement. One Blob appears as slovenly waste topside, but in the depths it’s as graceful as it is useful. Open up, loosen your belt, and get in the Tub.
oh! and before I forget! Before all of this above, I’ll be back on the drumstool, playing with Muscle Beach at this very thrown together, last minute, end of the year show, a Club Blob Tub Bonus Number 1 (The “Bonus” series as it is now dubbed, will be for shows I organize away from the monthly at Sardine). In this special mix we have old pal percussion wizard Chris Corsano coming thru town and doing a special solo set. He will surely blow minds with his perversely ambidextrous multitasking. Salenta + Topu are new friends who I first encountered playing a Minaret joint in DTLA with my eastcoast buddies The Cradle. I was immediately struck by their tender improvisatory language and warm rapport, all of this combined with a little grit and openness to imperfection made me an immediate fan. Muscle Beach has been slumbering for a couple months while our vocalist Jane was back in Italy, but we’re waking back up and about to slam some primo espresso, so we can’t wait to tickle you and eachother with our chaotic flailings. Mikaela and Grump have offered to trade off jams, giving us a nice sonic couch to chill on before, between and after. I hope you’re reading this far and will join us! okeedokie, happy new year!
